Yogi Gardening

The other day I posted an Instagram story about the resurgence of my inner critic while I was focussing on taking care of the ups and downs of life this past year. It isn’t a very unique tale but so many people got in touch to say how much it resonated I thought I would share a little bit more in a blog post.

When we’ve spent a lot of time working on our ‘stuff’ It’s always tempting to think that these things have been taken care of, but alas, it is called a practice for a reason, and if we’re in a chapter of life where our energy and focus have been taken on life events beyond our control, inner critics, catastrophising, and unhelpful habits can easily get a foot back in the door when we turn our attention to these other things.

Often it can take us a while to even realise that they are back taking centre stage, but what can we do to wrestle back some headpace when we realise?

Well, I like to begin with clearing out this old energy – ready to bring in the new. More on how I’m going to tackle this below, but first I wanted to share a really useful analogy I read recently:

It was about thinking of yourself as a garden (stay with me here!): Your life so far has meant you have many and varied plants already in your garden, but not all have been planted by you. Some are weeds that are taking up space, stopping you from growing a garden that thrives, others just aren’t a reflection of who you are anymore and need taking out altogether.

Spending some time clearing those weeds and unwanted plants, really getting down to the roots, and tending the soil means that you’ll have more time to nourish and care for the plants and the garden that you want going forward, and richer soil for new plants in the future.

So, this is my plan this February. In The Early Riser Yoga Club, we are going to be preparing our soil, clearing the weeds and the overgrowth, ready for Spring and Summer ahead. Creating and curating our internal spaces to clear any physical, mental or emotional blocks we may be holding onto from last year. Something that I very much feel in need of right now.

We are going to be working with our different layers of being, not just staying rooted in the physical, but tapping into our energetic bodies through the Kosha system too with some Dru sequences specifically designed to work on these many levels.

And if all this sounds a bit esoteric, not to worry, I invite you to just come along for the ride, enjoy the movement and see what comes up. That my friends, is a practice all on its own.
